Courtenay/Doran, position Knights of the Garter , 50mm pewter, Hollow-
Very Rare miniature of one of Courtenay's early work with Doran. Probably one of the first Courtenay poses painted with real heraldry. Purchased this at the Henry Kurtz April 1998 Auction. One of the Courtenay/Doran series of Knights of the Garter produced after 1928.
Very good paint and excellent condition of a hard to find early Courtenay Miniature. One of four Knights of the Garter in my collection!

Courtenay , position # 3 , 50mm pewter, Sir John de Hampton, with moveable visor.
The number 3 & 4 are two of my favorite Courtenay poses. I have several of each with some variation of helm, weapon and of course heraldry. This particular #3 miniature has unusual heraldry. However it is correct and is shown as John de Hampton on page 26 of Peter Greenhills "Heraldic Sketchbook". Also on page 212 is a drawing of a Courtenay Studio miniature with de Hampton heraldry.
The miniatures paint appears shiny as it has a light coat of varnish to protect the paint.

Very Rare miniature of one of Courtenay's early work with Doran. Purchased this at the London Xmas show in 2006. Very good paint and excellent condition of a hard to find unbroken miniature. Usually have the feather knocked off and the bow staff broken. These are getting impossible to find in any condition!

This is an original hollow cast figure that was in bad need of painting. Jacques Cuypers did a nice job of copying the Courtenay painting of an eagle that is on another Courtenay Doran in my collection. This on is undamaged with ax ,shield and crest intact.

Courtenay, position #18 , 48 mm pewter, Edward III, King of England
Excellent condition & paint, signed by R.Courtenay. This is a hard to find King of England with a movable visor and an intact Lyon Crest. The casting was used by Courtenay as the basis to modify and create many a pikeman and wounded knight lying down. Very unusual & with nicely painted heraldry This is considered to be the first Courtenay figure and is a direct descendant of the Courtenay/ Doran knights. Courtenay, position # Crusader , 50 mm pewter, Viscount De Brosse
Courtenay's Crusader figure was generally painted in the colors of the Hospitallers or Templar knights. On request he would paint this figure in other heraldry. In excellent condition with perfect paint! The Crusader figure is very similar to the position # 19 casting with the exception that the sword is not attached to knights head! Courtenay, Position #21, Pewter, 42mm, Prince Philippe le Hardi at Poitiers
This is one of the new pieces that I purchased at the Hackensack show, a nice example in near mint condition! Prince Philippe was 14 years old when he accompanied his father King Jean of France onto the battlefield at Poitiers!
His courage earned him the nickname le Hardi translated to the Bold! Hard to find miniature won't last long! See Greenhill's book “Heraldic Miniature Knights” page 43 for photos and details!

A Courtenay casting painted by Freddy Ping, a hard to find miniature with good paint in fine condition. The miniature is painted in matt finish typical of Ping’s lose style of work as different from Courtenay who worked in gloss with a crisper style of heraldry!

Courtenay & Doran , 48 mm pewter, Knights in Battle (pair)
This is an original hollow cast figure that was in bad need of painting. Jacques Cuypers did a nice job of copying the Courtenay painting of an eagle that is on another Courtenay Doran in my collection. This pair of figures has been separated at some point in it's life, however the 2 sections fit together perfectly. The sword is damaged on one knight but retains it's Lyon crest. The second knight is undamaged with ax & shield intact.
These miniatures are about 90 years old, very hard to find and are the beginning of Richard Courtenay's Legacy, refer to pages 4 -

Another possible casting painted by an unknown artist. Painted nicely with a rear Courtenay H6B miniature Mounted Knight. Paint is matt in very condition with a protective felt on underside of base. These were not intended to deceive collectors as the blue painted bases and felt bottoms, along with the matt paint, clearly would alert any Courtenay Fan to their origin.
